Abstract:
From the very early stages of human society, people developed rituals and beliefs about death. This shows the psychological growth of humans alongside their physical and intellectual development and this development largely acted as a catalyst in the process of social change. Purulia has always been a meeting ground of different cultures, communities and traditions, and has a large concentration of hero stones. The study area lies on the southern part of Purulia, considered as forested tribal zones that became blurred under the suppression of feudal kings of the central power (Pala-Sena empire). At the time of exploration in this area a term ‘Khastriya’ was highlighted in the folklore repeatedly associated with the burial practices. The present study tries to throw light on the contexts to understand the socio-political factors.
