Land, Life, and Legacy: A Thinai Based Interpretation of the movie Kadaisi Vivasayi

Abstract:

In the contemporary era where technologies are rapidly emerging and replacing many human tasks, there is a controversy surrounding the decline of literature. But when we think about it deeply, we arrive at the conclusion that as long as the world exists, the essence, impact, and importance of literature will never diminish. In this technologically advanced era, film has become one of the most dominant forms of art. Films inspire, educate, and encourage discussions about social, political, psychological, historical, and environmental issues. Because of their ability to connect with audiences emotionally and intellectually, films continue to attract people of all ages and backgrounds. This research article analyzes the Tamil movie, Kadaisi Vivasayi: directed by M. Manikandan and released in 2022, through the framework of Thinai, one of the oldest ecological and cultural concepts found in Sangam literature. Although the film can be effectively interpreted through the lens of ecocriticism, as it portrays the ecological concerns at the surface level, Thinai offers a deeper understanding of its cultural, emotional, and environmental dimensions. The film illustrates the profound relationships between the landscape, the characters-especially the main character Mayandi- and their emotions, demonstrating how these elements are deeply connected. According to Thinai, landscapes are divided into five categories, each distinguished by its unique geographical characteristics and cultural features. In the movie, the major characters embody these Thinai landscapes, as their emotions, actions, and experiences are closely connected to the landscapes they inhabit.
