Abstract:
Public USB charging stations offer convenient power for smart phones and other mobile devices in airports, train stations, hotels, cafes, and shopping centers. However, they also create an underappreciated cyber security risk known as “juice jacking.” This attack exploits the dual-purpose nature of USB connections—power plus data—by using compromised ports or malicious charging cables to install malware or extract sensitive data when a device is connected. Because devices typically indicate only that they are charging, users can remain unaware while attackers gain access to contacts, photos, messages, saved credentials, and financial information. Juice jacking can occur quickly and silently, leveraging either hardware modifications (infected public ports or cables that include data lines) or software-driven exploits that prompt a user to accept a data connection. The ubiquity of mobile devices and their growing role in personal and financial activities magnifies the impact of such breaches: a single brief connection in a public place can enable long-term surveillance, credential theft, or lateral movement into corporate networks. This abstract synthesizes current concerns around juice jacking, highlighting attack mechanisms, typical targets, and the reasons it remains effective—user trust in public infrastructure, lack of visible symptoms, and widespread use of USB for both charging and data. It also underscores preventive strategies including using power-only (charge-only) cables or USB data blockers, relying on portable chargers or wall adapters, disabling data exchange when charging, and maintaining endpoint protections and regular backups. Public awareness, clear signage at charging stations, and vendor security practices can further reduce risk. As mobile devices increasingly store sensitive personal and business information, mitigating juice jacking must become a routine element of personal cybersecurity hygiene and organizational risk management. Addressing this threat requires both simple user behaviors and broader infrastructural measures to ensure that public convenience does not come at the cost of digital safety.
