Effects of the Gig Economy on Labour Market

Author(s): Dr. Nishi Mishra

Abstract:

The gig economy has emerged as one of the most significant transformations in the modern labour market. It refers to a labour market characterized by short-term, flexible, and freelance work arrangements instead of traditional full-time employment. Digital platforms such as Uber, Fiverr, Upwork, Swiggy, and Zomato have facilitated the growth of gig work by connecting workers directly with consumers. While the gig economy offers opportunities for flexible working hours, supplementary income, and entrepreneurial independence, it also raises concerns regarding job security, social protection, income stability, and workers' rights. This descriptive research paper examines the effects of the gig economy on labour markets by reviewing existing literature, identifying its advantages and challenges, and analysing its economic and social implications. The study concludes that although the gig economy contributes to employment generation and labour market flexibility, policymakers must develop regulatory frameworks to ensure fair wages, social security, and equitable labour standards.
