Abstract:
Digital payment systems have moved from an optional banking facility to everyday economic infrastructure in India. UPI, mobile wallets, cards, Aadhaar-enabled payments and internet banking now connect households, merchants and public agencies at unprecedented speed. This paper examines their influence on financial inclusion and consumer behaviour. Digital payments can convert account ownership into regular use, support direct transfers, lower distance barriers and give small merchants a formal transaction trail. They also normalise instant payments and convenience. Yet access is not identical to meaningful inclusion. Weak connectivity, limited digital literacy, fraud, privacy concerns, language barriers and uneven grievance handling can exclude vulnerable users. Using descriptive and analytical research based entirely on secondary data for 2014 to 2024, the paper reviews official statistics and selected studies. It concludes that India's next phase should emphasise safe usage, consumer capability, interoperability and accountable innovation rather than transaction volume alone.
